One of the few regrets I have in life is that I never made it down to St. Pete where the Cardinals held spring training from 1938 until 1997.
I remember the games KMOX would broadcast every March. Mike Shannon and Jack Buck would tease listeners freezing in St. Louis with vivid descriptions of a balmy 72 degree day, palm trees swaying in the breeze, and sailboats bobbing in the bay behind left field. Those two could make you feel like you were sitting right there next to them in the booth, and it also signaled the end of winter.
When you heard Jack and Mike on the radio, you KNEW summer was coming!
